This is a question that I see pop up frequently on the local social apps and forums I frequent. There are a lot of pet parents who love their pets and want to take the best care of them, but may not be able to afford the rates normally charged at the veterinary clinic.
I put together a resource page to help pet folks in the area find the most economical ways to get their pets spayed, neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped.
Spaying and/or neutering is the responsible way to prevent unwanted pregnancies in pets and helps to minimize the ever-growing stray population. There are many organizations around town that will de-sex your cat or dog.
Spaying female dogs prevents the animal from 'going into heat'. Neutering male dogs can decrease aggressiveness and other behavior issues. Spaying and neutering prevents litters of unwanted puppies and kittens.
TCAP is one of the organizations in North Texas that performs pet wellness services at a low cost.
Microchipping is quick procedure that embeds a chip in the nape of your animal to help track him/her if they get lost or stolen. Once the chip has been registered to the owner, it can be scanned by a special wand by animal control professionals to identify the home the animal belongs too.
Vaccinations help our pets stay healthy by preventing the contraction of communicable diseases. Some of these are rabies, distemper, parvovirus, and feline leukemia. Additionally, vaccines can protect against canine adenovirus, parainfluenza, leptospirosis, and Bordetella (kennel cough).
The Texas Coalition for Animal Protection (TCAP) is a popular place for pet parents and other citizens to take cats and dogs for the above mentioned services.
There are eight TCAP (Texas Coalition for Animal Protection) locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) in Allen, Arlington, Burleson, Denton, Fort Worth, Garland, Hurst, and Weatherford.
TCAP is one of many animal care clinics in the metroplext that can help with pet wellness. Check the 'pet resources' for more options. If you know of other low cost or no cost options for pet wellness, please share the information with me so that I can add the organization to my resource page. You can send an email to CDHpetcare@gmail.com You can also find video resources on a playlist I put together on the CatsDogsHarmony youtube channel.
